Abstract

This paper discusses a training model suitable for senior high school debaters in Indonesian context. This model is designed to address the difficulties which I have encountered in my years of training senior high school debaters and teachers in West Sumatera Province, Indonesia. One major problem which I have almost always confronted is students’ reluctance to speak despite their interest in debating. These students were afflicted with severe level of speaking anxiety which is hampering their willingness to debate. There are two reasons which prompt this high level of speaking anxiety: lack of background knowledge and language competence. Therefore, scaffolding is needed to deal with those problems. This model comprises of several steps, which are: Background Knowledge Building; Constructing Arguments For and Against a Motion; and Delivering the Arguments.

Model pelatihan ini terdiri dari tiga tahapan, yaitu: Background Knowledge Building; Constructing Arguments For and Against a Motion; dan Delivering the Arguments.
