Abstract

Conjunctions used to connect sentences and paragraphs are often misused in writing research proposals, especially in subchapter background of the study. Mothertongue interference as the first language is one of the causes. It may lead to difficulty when students have Indonesian concept in their minds but they have to write their thoughts in English because grammatically both languages are different. This research aims at finding out the micro level coherence in writing subchapter background of the study. This research used content analysis and descriptive research design. Six research proposals were taken from the first submission in the early semester. Data were collected by documentation. Data were analysed through three stages. They are data reduction, data description, and data verification. Triangulation was applied to do validity checking. Based on the research result, it is found that students can use conjunctions properly. They can use them based on their functions. Research finding shows that there is only one conjunction misuse among conjunctions found in six research proposals. Students use conjunctions based on their functions. In addition, they are aware of using conjunctions to make readers understand about content and context in subchapter background of the study. It can be concluded that students’ understanding in using conjunctions is good.
