Abstract
This research is based on students who experience beginning reading difficulties. The aim of this research is to determine students' initial reading abilities before using the language experience approach assisted by bigbook media; students' ability to read beginning after using the bigbook media-assisted language experience approach; and the influence of the bigbook media-assisted language experience approach on students' ability to begin reading. The research sample was second grade elementary school students in Purwakarta, and the type of research used was quasi-experimental which was not comparable to the control group. The type of research used in this research is a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design, with the research sample being second grade elementary school students in Purwakarta. Based on the research results, it can be concluded: 1) the average score in the pretest for the experimental class and the control class is in the low category, and there is no difference in the average score; 2) after applying the language experience approach assisted by serial image media, there is a difference in the class posttest results experiments and control classes. Then there was an increase in posttest scores in the experimental class. This can be seen from the results of descriptive analysis and inferential analysis, but the average value is still in the low category; 3) There is a strong influence on students' initial reading abilities after implementing the language experience approach assisted by bigbook media.
