The Correlation Between Self-concept and Students' Listening Achievement

Abstract


This research was conducted to find out the correlation between self-concept and students' listening achievement. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population in this study was English education students in class 2023 at Universitas Negeri Padang and the sample was students in class K1-23. There are two instruments used in this study, the first is a questionnaire to measure the student's self-concept using a Guttman scale. The questionnaire consisted of 24 statements, with 12 positive statements and 12 negative statements. After that, the researcher correlated the results of the student questionnaire with the final listening test scores as a measure of their listening achievement. Data collection was carried out offline by means of researcher making a meeting with the sample class, namely class K1-23. The result obtained through The Pearson correlation coefficient between the two variables is -0.385 with a significance level of 0.69. The correlation is not statistically significant because the significance value is greater than 0.05. The null hypothesis (H0) is thus accepted, demonstrating that there is no correlation between students' listening achievement and their self-concept. This can be due to a small sample and listening is included in the receptive skill where this skill does not require the ability to produce language, but rather receive and understand.
