Campur Kode dalam Tawar-Menawar di Pasar Johar: Bentuk, Konteks Tutur, dan Urutan Harga yang Teramati
Abstract
This study examines code-mixing forms, speech-event contexts, and observed price sequences in six bargaining events at Johar Market, Semarang. It applies interactional sociolinguistic speech-event analysis rather than an ethnography of communication, since data come from a single day of fieldwork. The corpus comprises six purposively selected events (47 turns) of naturally occurring seller–buyer talk containing Indonesian–Javanese contact. Forms are classified with Muysken’s (2000) typology, Javanese speech levels (ngoko, krama) are coded following Wolff and Poedjosoedarmo (1982), and context is read through Hymes’s (1974) SPEAKING framework and turn-by-turn sequence. Insertion is the most frequent pattern (21 tokens); congruent lexicalization was tested and not found. Seprapat, mepet, and punten are not counted as code-mixing. Price changes only in Data 3 (Rp60,000 to Rp55,000 to Rp40,000 per kg): the first step occurs in an Indonesian-speaking dyad, the second after a second buyer’s turn containing Javanese particles. In Data 6 the Rp85,000-to-Rp80,000 statement is not coded as a bargaining reduction because the seller ties the gap to garment size. Co-occurrence does not establish causality; code-mixing is better read as part of the interactional organization of bargaining than as an independent cause of price change.
