Abstract
This research aims to compare the types and functions of swear words uttered by the main male and female characters in the Casino (1995) and Uncut Gems (2019). A descriptive quantitative method was used in this research to emphasize the data. The data containing swear words were collected from the two movie scripts and were categorized according to Ljung’s (2011) theory of swear word types and functions. After that, the researcher compares the data, uttered by main male and female characters in both movies to identify the differences between them. The findings indicate that female characters in both movies use swear words mainly to express emotions like anger and frustration. Interestingly, the female character in Casino (1995) swears more frequently than the one in Uncut Gems (2019), suggesting that character conflict and personality play a more significant role than the movie’s era. This challenges the assumption that modern movies provide greater expressive freedom for female characters. In contrast, male characters in both movies consistently use more profanity, often as a means of asserting dominance. Overall, the study suggests that the frequency and function of swearing are influenced more by character traits, narrative roles, and situational context than by time period.
