Abstract

This study aims to investigate the implementation of group work in English learning at SMAN 1 Muara Bungo, focusing on the implementation, challenges faced, and teachers’ efforts in overcoming them. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were obtained through interviews of English teachers. The results show that group work is often applied because it’s able to improve collaboration, active participation, and student confidence. Teachers from groups randomly or based on ability according to the difficulty level of the task. The main challenges include uneven participation and the discomfort of working with unfamiliar friends. To overcome these obstacles, teachers conducted active monitoring, provided feedback, and encouraged student reflection. Despite the obtacles, group work proved effective in improving English language proficiency and cooperation skills.
