Abstract


The present study investigeted the role of AI writing tools in assist students to use writing organization, including the use of coherence and cohesion in their thesis proposal, especially in the background of the problem section that submitted for their thesis writing class final project. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive research method which are document analysis and interview. Nine students’ proposal background were analyzed. From the findings of document analysis, AI writing tools (AWTs) had significant role to assist in the use of coherence but, AWTs still minimal in the use of consistent pronouns. In contrast, the use of repeated key nouns was more considerably higher. Then, for the cohesion, AWTs had successfully complete it. Still, the use of coordinating conjunctions was rare. On the other hand, transitional words were used more frequent, followed by personal pronouns, subordinating conjunctions, and demonstrative adjectives. Furthermore, there is an interview to explore how English language students employ AWTs into the process of wrting their thesis proposals. Based on the results, according to the students’ statements, AWTs helped them to generate ideas, improve grammar, expand vocabulary, and make their writing more organized and connected. Students also found that AWTs useful for saving time, finding sources, and developing their academic writing skills.
