Abstract


This study aims to analyze teachers' communication styles during verbal interactions with students in the classroom. The focus is to understand the types and characteristics of communication styles used by teachers, as well as their impact on student engagement and learning. This study is a descriptive qualitative research using observation as the main data collection technique. The subject was an English teacher at SMPN 13 Padang. The data were analyzed using reflective thematic analysis (RTA) methodology. RTA is a research method developed by Braun and Clarke (2019) which is a methodological approach with the ability to investigate themes and patterns in qualitative data. The results showed that teachers used three types of communication styles: assertive, aggressive, and passive, with the assertive communication style being the most dominant. This communication style allows teachers to foster a supportive classroom atmosphere that encourages students to actively participate and communicate during lessons. This study concludes that teachers' communication styles play an important role in building effective teacher-student interactions.
