Lanskap Linguistik di Kampung Pondok: Refleksi Identitas Sosial Masyarakat Tionghoa Kota Padang
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe the signs, patterns, and functions of the linguistic landscape (LL) found in the Kampung Pondok area of Padang City. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic approach. However, a quantitative approach is also used to determine the percentage of dominant LL usage. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and photography techniques, while data analysis was carried out through data reduction, presentation, and verification. The study aims to reveal how the use of LL signs, patterns, and functions in Kampung Pondok reflects the social identity of the Chinese ethnic community in Padang City. The results of the study show that: (1) the use of predominantly bottom-up LL signs provides opportunities for the use of Chinese language on business signs, community association boards, etc.; (2) the dominance of monolingual Indonesian language use reflects that Chinese-Indonesian citizens in Padang City are able to integrate within a culturally diverse society; and (3) the display of these LL signs and patterns primarily serves economic functions, which aligns with the community’s vision that relies heavily on the trade sector for livelihood. These findings indicate that although the linguistic landscape in Kampung Pondok prioritizes the use of Indonesian as a general communication tool, it still reflects the social identity, history, and ethnic origins of the Chinese community.
