Abstract

The limited research evaluating Korean language textbooks for Indonesian learners, particularly at the intermediate level, underscores the need for more comprehensive analysis. This study compares the speaking skill content of two widely used textbooks in Indonesia, Bahasa Korea Terpadu untuk Orang Indonesia and the Institut Bahasa Korea Raja Sejong textbook. This research adopts Cunningsworth’s (1995) evaluation framework and uses a qualitative content analysis approach. Data were collected from all speaking activities consisting of dialogues that share similar topics and social situations, ensuring comparable data for direct analysis of topic relevance and the appropriateness of language style in the conversations. Data analysis was conducted through manual coding to identify topic relevance based on the intermediate-level standard topic list from the National Institute of Korean Language (Kim 2017) and the appropriateness of language style based on politeness levels by Lee (2011) and Lee (2016). The findings indicate that Bahasa Korea Terpadu covers 80% of the standard topics, with speaking activities presented in a structured manner and consistently using the formal style [haeyoche]. In contrast, the King Sejong Korean Language Institute textbook covers 86.67% of the standard topics, offering more flexible speaking activity variations and showing greater diversity in language styles, including the informal style [haeche]. A significant difference is seen in the communication approaches: Bahasa Korea Terpadu tends to be normative and academic, while the King Sejong Korean Language Institute textbook is more contextual and closer to everyday social communication. This study contributes to textbook evaluation theory and serves as a practical reference for developing more applicable teaching materials and Korean language instruction that better meets the needs of Indonesian learners.
