Gugus Kata dalam Wacana Akademis Mahasiswa: Kajian Linguistik Korpus
Abstract
Word clusters serve as critical indicators for evaluating language use and stylistic elements within academic discourse. This study aims to delineate the characteristics of word clusters, grammatical structures, and discourse functions present in proposals submitted to the Student Creativity Program (PKM) funded by Universitas Airlangga from 2019 to 2022. Furthermore, this research endeavors to investigate the manifestation of word clusters in the Indonesian language within the written discourse of undergraduate students, an area that remains underexplored. The methodology employed comprises a mixed-methods approach, integrating both quantitative and qualitative analyses, and utilizing a corpus-based framework facilitated by the AntConc tool (version 4.2.4). The dataset comprises 125 texts totaling 253,098 tokens, from which three-word clusters (3-grams) were identified through the N-Gram feature. The identified word clusters were categorized based on structural composition and elemental completeness, and their discourse functions were analyzed in accordance with Hyland's (2008) classification: research, text, and participant-based functions. The findings revealed five word clusters with the highest frequency, including "this study is," "is one of," and "in this study." The clusters produced by students exhibit notable similarities to the academic discourse characteristics found in higher-level academic outputs, such as theses, dissertations, and journal articles. This indicates students' proficiency in imitating and reproducing established academic writing styles.
