Abstract
This research analyzed and described the types of expressive language disorder in the eleven YouTube videos (2009-2022) from children with Asperger syndrome. It aims to identify the verbal and non-verbal communication impairment in the utterances of Asperger’s children. In this research, Carroll’s theory (1985) about expressive language disorder on verbal communication of ASD and Gilberg’s (2002) theory about non-verbal impairments of expressive language specifically on Asperger syndrome are used. The qualitative methods were used to analyze the data which consisted of the utterances of Asperger syndrome children. The result reveal that the videos contained 192 appearances of verbal communication impairment, with Phonological Disorder appeared 133 times, Pragmatic Disorder with 35 times, Semantic Disorder was 19 appearances, and Syntactical Disorder was 5 appearances. Meanwhile, the non-verbal communication impairments appeared 55 times with Gauche Body Language occured 21 times, inappropriate facial expression appeared 15 times, peculiar stiff gaze with 12 times, limited facial expression with 4 appearances, and limited use of gestures with 3 times. This analysis shows that a lot of expressive language disorder on the children in YouTube videos was found because of the difficulties of the children to use and convey the language as a mean of communication.
