Abstract

One of the main challenges in translating puns is capturing the double meanings or puns present in the source language. This requires creative thinking and a deep understanding of language from the translators, as a humorous play on words in one culture may not have the same effect in another culture. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of puns and to identify the translation techniques employed by the translator in translating puns found in Gravity Falls animated series into the Indonesian language. This study used Delabastita (1996) types of puns and translation techniques as the main theoretical frameworks. This study applies a descriptive-qualitative method with observation as the main technique. The data used in this study are the utterances that contain puns in the subtitle of Gravity Falls from English into Indonesian. The findings of this research reveal that there are six types found in the series, including homonymy, homophony, paronymy, polysemy, idiomatic, and morphological. The results also show that out of eight translation techniques proposed, three pun translation techniques was applied by the translator, including pun to pun, pun to non-pun, and pun ST=pun TT.
