Translation Techniques Used In Subtitle “500 Days of Summer” Movie Provided By Male And Female Fansubs

Abstract

This study discusses the use of translation techniques in subtitle “500 Days of Summer” movie provided by male and female fansubs, namely Andriawan and Rista Amelia. This study aims to identify and compare the types of translation techniques used by male and female main characters in male and female fansubs. This study uses Gottlieb’s theory (1992) to identify the translation techniques. A descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct this study. The findings indicate that both translators predominantly use the transfer technique. However, Andriawan applies it equally to Tom and Summer, whereas Rista Amelia uses it more for Summer. This shows that Summer's character tends to be translated more faithfully by female translators to the original text. In addition, Summer expression mostly translated by using techniques such as paraphrase, imitation, and expansion, which makes her speech sound longer, more natural, and expressive.
