Abstract

Abstract

Social change brought by the Bolshevik Revolution significantly transformed the structure of Russian society, affecting individuals’ roles, spaces, and identities. This thesis analyzes A Gentleman in Moscow (2016) by Amor Towles, focusing on how alienation is embodied in the life of the main character, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, as a consequence of political and economic restructuring. The study applies Marxist theory particularly the concept of alienation and New Historicism to explore how the novel reflects the impact of historical and ideological shifts on the individual. Using a descriptive-qualitative method, this research identifies five forms of embodied alienation experienced by the Count: social status alienation, political alienation, spatial alienation, existential alienation, and alienation recovery. These alienations are not only ideological but also manifest physically, emotionally, and socially. demonstrating the deeply personal consequences of systemic transformation.
