Abstract


This study focused on analyzing the types of slang words and word formation processes by the male and female main characters. The slang words were collected from a movie titled “Do Revenge”. There were two theories used in this research, types of slang words by Allan and Burridge (2006) and types of word formation processes by George Yule (2006). This study was conducted using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by downloading the movie, watching the movie, reading the movie subtitles, taking notes of all the slang words that were spoken by the male and female main characters, classifying the data based on the theories that were used, and categorized it based on the gender of the main characters. After the data were analyzed, it can be concluded that there were four out of five types of slang words appeared in this movie that were spoken by the main characters. They were flippant, fresh and creative, imitative, and clipping. Female main characters used slang more frequently (83.96%) than the male character (16.04%). For the word formation processes, there were seven out of ten types appeared in this movie. They were conversion, borrowing, derivation, compounding, clipping, coinage and blending. The most frequently used is compounding with 32 times slang words appeared using this type of word formation process with a percentage of 30.19%.
