Abstract


This article discusses the Netflix animation called Castlevania Season 1 by Warren Ellis. The aim of this research is to find the figurative languages found in the source language (SL) and what are the subtitling strategies used to translate the figurative language found in the target language (TL). The research uses Perrine’s theory to classify the figurative language and Gottlieb’s theory. To conduct this study, the researcher used descriptive-qualitative method. Based on the findings, it found that there are 9 types of figurative language in the source text, they are hyperbole, irony, understatement, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, simile, metaphor, and personification. The highest type of figurative language found is irony with total 30 (22%) data. For the subtitling strategies to translate the figurative language, there are 5 types found, they are  expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, and condensation. The most frequent type of the subtitling strategies is transfer with total 65 data (49%).
