Abstract


This research is about analysing impoliteness strategies in The adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938) film. It aims to find out the types of impoliteness and the response of impoliteness in this film. This study used the theory of Culpeper (1996) about the 5 strategies of impoliteness and Culpeper, et.al (2003) 4 types of impoliteness responses. The researcher utilised qualitative method to analyze the data and to describe the results of this analysis. The results of this study indicate that there are 62 types of impoliteness used by the characters in the cartoon of The adventures of Tom Sawyer. The most commonly strategy used in the film is Bald on record impoliteness is the most used strategy with total usage of 19 times. Meanwhile, Negative impoliteness were used 17 times, total usage of Positive Impoliteness is 12 times, and mock politeness and sarcasm used 11 times. The most rarely strategy found is Withhold Politeness with the number of usage 3 times. The response found consisted of 4 types of responses namely Accepting face attack appears 16 times, Offensive Countering 10 times, Defensive Countering 14 times, and No response 28 times, whether it is in the form of verbal and nonverbal responses. This finding shows how much impoliteness strategies occurs in The adventures of Tom Sawyer film adaptation and drawing a coclusion that the film classified aggresive and active.
