Abstract


The Covid19 pandemic has changed the system and implementation of the learning activities at various levels of educational units by adopting an online learning system. Technology-assisted learning is currently one of the alternatives taken by educators to carry out learning activities so that students can easily understand the material presented, one of which is using learning media based on augmented reality and virtual reality. Many studies have been carried out to determine the effectiveness of this technology on conventional learning activities. This research aims to review the latest research regarding the trend and effectiveness of using augmented reality and virtual reality technology implementation in digital learning. Here, we focus to the articles published during 2019 to 2022 in Science Direct database. We found that there is an increasing number of studies regarding the use of augmented and virtual reality in Computer science and engineering, nursing and health profession, social science and psychology learning. Based on the number of articles, we found that augmented reality and virtual reality is mostly adopted in engineering, health and medical educational field. This finding also refutes that although many empirical studies show that augmented reality has a positive impact on student learning outcomes, this has not been widely adopted in the world of education. What needs to be paid attention to is that the use of augmented reality and virtual reality-based media can be collaborated with traditional learning methods to provide a better learning experience. Apart from that, the adoption of this technology can also provide challenges for all stakeholders involved.
