Abstract

ABSTRACT

Endophytic fungus are microorganisms that live in the tissues of plants and produce secondary metabolites similar to its host. Isolates of endophytic fungi could be obtained from various plants, one of the leaves Sitawa (Costus speciosus (Koen.) J.E Smith). Costus speciosus its potential as a drug, because the content of diosgenin compounds, tannins, steroids, alkaloids and phenols which are secondary metabolites and acts as an antibacterial. This study aims to determine isolates of endophytic fungi found on leaves of Costus speciosus and its potential as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. The research was conducted from May to June 2016 in the Laboratory of Microbiology Department of Biology, Mathematic and Sains of Faculty Padang Univercity. This study was a descriptive study with endophytic fungi isolated from leaf Costus spesiosus and test the antibacterial potency against Staphyllococcus aureus. The parameters observed in determining the outcome of insulation seen from the colony color, form colonies and the establishment of clear zone on the test results as an antibacterial potency.Endophytic fungi isolation research results obtained three types of isolates that isolates the CS-1, CS-2 and CS-3. To test the potential as an antibacterial obtained clear zone with the average - average isolates CS-1 (12.1 mm), Isolate CS-2 (12.5 mm) and Isolate CS-3 (9.7 mm). 3 endophytic fungi isolates obtained from the leaves of Costus speciosus that have potential as an antibacterial.
