Abstract

ABSTRACT

A research was done on steel coated with copper by electroplating with variations in the temperature and the electrolyte solution concentration. Corrosion on metal resulted in quality decrease and material losses. One of the efforts to protect metals against corrosion is by applying the electroplating principle. Electroplating is a way of coating the metal by using electric current. In Electroplating, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy in the electrolytic cell. The purpose of this research was to find out the resistance of low carbon steel against corrosion by variations in the temperature and the electrolyte solution concentration. In this research, electroplating of low carbon steel with copper was done at 9 volts electric voltage with time variations on 10, 20, and 30 minutes at 450C, 550C and 650C temperature.Corrosion test was done by immersing the test specimen in a container contained NaCl with 5% NaCl concentration to subtitute seawater for 5 days (Abdul LatifMurabbi). Based on the research result, it was concluded that the time difference of copper coating on low carbon steel by electroplating with variations in time and temperature resulted in unevenly layers. However, gradual correlation between temperature and time of copper coating on low carbon steel was not found. It is similar with the resistance of low carbon steel coated by copper by electroplating with variations of temperature and time which did not have gradual correlation with the resistance against corrosion, however, significance difference was found on steel not coated with copper. Therefore, further research related to iron and copper compounds using other methods but electrochemistry needs to be conducted.
