Placental Histopathology Following Rubraxanthone Administration in Mice (Mus musculus): A Toxicological Study
Abstract
Rubraxanthone is a primary compound isolated from the bark of the tamarind plant (Garcinia cowa Roxb), which has biological activity as an anti-cancer, anti-cholesterol, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-thrombocyte effect. However, its safety profile concerning reproductive health, particularly placental development, remains poorly understood. This study aims to examine the impact of varying doses of Rubraxanthone on placental histopathological changes. Rubraxanthone was given in suspension form to 20 mice divided into four groups during the organogenesis period. Three treatment groups received 2, 4, and 8 mg/kgBW doses. Laparotomy was conducted on the 18th day of pregnancy. Histopathological changes in the placenta were observed descriptively. The study demonstrated that the dosage of Rubraxanthone administered influenced the histopathological changes in the placenta. The treatment group received rubraxanthone at a 4 mg/kgBW dose, which resulted in observed stasis and thrombosis. Meanwhile, the group given rubraxanthone at a dose of 8 mg/kgBW exhibited more severe damage, including necrosis, edema, and the formation of cavities. Based on the research, it was concluded that increasing the Rubraxanthone given during the study would affect the level of damage from histopathological changes in the placenta.
