The study on authorial and non-authorial affect and its link to speaker’s intention (an appraisals theory approach)

Abstract


This study concerns with authorial and non-authorial affect in speech. The aim is to find out the types of affect, its distribution, and the translation shift that occurs in graduation. This study used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were obtained through content analysis. The data was analyzed by using domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis. The result of this study indicates that the use of authorial affect, non authorial affect and authorial-non authorial are to influence or to trigger the response expected from the audience. It is also to show to the audience the image of each speakers. In relation to translation study, it is found that there are shift that occurs in graduations in the target text caused by translation technique. The study concludes that the speakers uses three types of affect based on their intentions and the application of translation technique affects the graduation level.
