Madonna's 1994 album Bedtime Stories tops iTunes chart

by Pete Wise (2020-05-08)

More than 25 years after its initial release, one of Madonna's most under-appreciated albums is getting some love.

Bedtime Stories, the Material Girl's sixth studio album released in 1994, shot to the top position of the U.S. iTunes chart on Thursday, thanks to a fan-led hashtag campaign '#JusticeForBedtimeStories'.

The campaign follows in the footsteps of #JusticeForEMC2, a similar move made by the Mariah Carey fandom in support of her 2008 album, as well as an effort on behalf of Janet Jackson's 1986 record Control.

Madonna's Bedtime Stories marked a transitional time in the career of the now 61-year-old performer, after she pushed the envelope with 1992's salacious Erotica album and the publication of her Sex book, and before her Golden Globe-winning role as buttoned-up Evita Peron in 1996's musical film Evita.

And while Bedtime Stories' final track, Take A Bow, spent seven weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 - to date her longest-running number-one single - only one of the album's other singles, Secret, managed to break the top 10.

Still, Bedtime Stories remains to this day one of Madge's most cohesive and melodic albums, containing one of her best songs of all time - the brazen and unapologetic anthem Human Nature.

From that point on, Madonna would continue to score monstrously big hits with succeeding albums Ray Of Light, Music and Confessions On A Dance Floor, along with several other well-received records, tours and a show-stopping 2012 Super Bowl Halftime performance.

Needless to say, Madonna fans are among the most loyal and vocal, so it's no wonder they were able to mobilize in order to make #JusticeForBedtimeStories a success, with supporters dropping $4.99 to purchase the album, and/or stream it on the platform.

Now, with a staggering 14 albums under her belt, Madonna remains at the height of influence, as seen also on Thursday when Kelly Clarkson covered her smash hit 1989 single Like A Prayer for the latest edition of her 'Kellyoke' videos.

As for the newfound success of Bedtime Stories, Madonna took to her Facebook page late Thursday morning, writing, 'The "Bedtime Stories" album is currently #1 on iTunes U.S! Thank you to all my fans who got it there!! #stayhome musical companion! #bedtimestories #madonnafans #togetherapart'

Mariah, meanwhile, celebrated her 2008 album E=MC2 reaching the top iTunes spot on Monday by thanking her fans and performing the track Last Kiss from the record on her Instagram, while Janet tweeted a 'Thank You' to her fans for getting Control into the Top Five on Wednesday.
