Abstract


Abstract: The aim of this research was to reveal the relation of literature reading interest and the ability of appreciative reading to the ability of writing narrative of the eighth grade students of SMPN 32 Padang. Three hypothesis which were proposed have been proved. First, the students’ reading interest has positive impact to the ability of narrative writing. Second, the ability of appreciative reading has positive relation to the ability of narrative writing. Third, literature reading interest and the ability of appreciative reading have positive relation to students’ ability of narrative writing

The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMPN 32 Padang in the academic year of 2011-2012, which consists of 183 students. The sample of this research was 39 students which are chosen by using proportional random sampling technique. Research data was taken by using questionnaire, test, and performance.

The result of this research shown that (1) students’ literature reading interest has significant relation to the ability of students’ narrative writing, (2) the ability of appreciative reading has significant relation (13,5%) to the ability of students’ narrative writing, (3) literature reading interest and students’ appreciative reading ability altogether have a significant relation (27,5%) to students’ ability of narrative writing. Based on this research, it can be concluded that students’ reading interest and the ability of appreciative reading are the factors which influence the ability of narrative writing of the eighth grade students of SMPN 32 Padang. Therefore, the researcher suggests that Indonesian language teachers should give more attention to students’ literature reading interest and may not ignore the ability of appreciative reading in order to improve the ability of writing, especially in narrative writing.
